Our Sick Days

Today is the one week mark since Ellie had Hand, Foot, & Mouth disease (yuck).  She caught it at church a few Sundays ago (apparently it all the nursery kids got it).  So, exposure on Sunday.  On Friday we noticed that she had an oozing eye and what looked like a pimple on her chin.  By Friday evening her whole chin and part of her upper lip was covered in sores, but we just thought it was a rash and were more concerned with her eye.  Saturday morning we noticed that her other eye was infected and that night we saw a sore on her foot.  The next day we noticed a sore on her hand which confirmed our suspicions from the night before that she had not just Pink Eye, but Hand, Foot, and Mouth disease.  Monday morning we went to an early morning doctor's appointment (early as in before 7 a.m.) and the doc officially told us that Elles had everything we thought she did.  Back at home I noticed that Lainey had a fever.  Ugh!
Monday was our main sick day.  The kids watched lots of t.v. and napped.  But Tuesday morning Lainey was fever-free and not only did Ellie not have any new sores (which would have indicated that she was still contagious) but what appeared to be budding sores the day before were all gone.  I was happy that the kids were feeling great and no longer contagious.  Unfortunately our friends were a little gun-shy about getting together so we hung out just the three of us for the remainder of the week.

Fun with baking soda & vinegar:
 Fun with tape:
 Painting with paint:
Painting with water:
An outing to Huntley Meadows:
We saw a muskrat, geese, heron, frogs, snakes, and various birds and bugs that I could not identify.  At one point Lainey lingered behind to examine a bug with her magnifying glass and was surprised by a green snake that slithered onto the boardwalk near her.
We also saw the beaver dam and .  .  .
the beaver house (though the little girls weren't as interested as I was).
Today will be even more exciting (and busy).  On the agenda: we've got piano lessons, a birthday party, a playdate, and water park excursion (make that an afternoon relaxing at home thanks to the weather).  Can't wait.
Incidentally I think I know how Ellie infected her eye.  The other day I saw her brush her teeth and then immediately brush her eyes with her toothbrush.  Oh, and the biggest surprise for me was Ellie's reaction to her eye drops.  I thought I'd have to hold her down and pry her eyes open.  Turns out she likes them, she'd flop down on her back and giggle when I put the drops in.

Oh Jill. What a nightmare. Infected at church? We all complain about the colds and fevers that get passed through nursery but foot, hand, and mouth disease? That makes me cringe and die. Gross. Looks like you made the most of it--you always do! The girls will have craft projects to highlight their time in quarantine. Hard to believe it will ever be warm enough for water parks!
