Lizzie updates

Liz is growing and changing so much. I can't believe my little baby is now approaching eight years old, about the finish 2nd grade. It's going by so, so fast. I figured I'd jot down a little bit about her so that I (and later, she) can remember this stage.

For starters she's just as passionate and dramatic as ever. Last Sunday she tearfully complained because I wouldn't let her wear makeup to church, saying "You always look pretty and I look plain all the time."  One night this week she told me about some of her friend's divorced parents and then worried that Drew and I would go that same route.  Nothing I said seemed to satisfy her.  She kept saying, "but how do you know" until I was too frustrated and tired (it was well past bedtime) to continue.  And of course, I am regularly the meanest or worstest mom ever, she never gets to stay up late, and she always has to clean up everything.
She's trying out new skills and vocabulary and boundaries. The other day I put my feet on Lizzie's chair (we were seated opposite one another in a booth) and she exclaimed, "I don't want your feet to interact with my territory!"

The hair in the face is typical.  It drives me crazy, but she doesn't seem to mind it at all.  Argh!
She's really interested in Legos.  I'd say she pulls those out to play with about as often as she pulls out her My Little Ponies and Barbies. So far she prefers to follow the instructions instead of building her own creations. She has two sets: one builds a Harry Potter Quidich field, the other builds a plane, helicopter, or boat. Of course she's also excited about her American Girl dolls and has been carrying around a baby doll the last few days. I'm glad she's still young enough to play with toys. She's lost a couple more teeth this month and then she promptly lost both before she could put them under her pillow at night. For the first tooth she wrote a sweet note to the Tooth Fairy, addressing it to "my dearest friend" and requesting personal information, such as the fairy's real name. She didn't even know she lost the second tooth until I pointed it out to her. After that she agonized about whether or not she swallowed it and talked about throwing up so much that I wrote her a tooth fairy note assuring her that she did not, in fact, swallow it.

A few days later, Andrew told her the truth about the tooth fairy when she pointedly asked him. When I asked her if she was sad, she said "no, because I asked Daddy to tell me the actual truth" (which left me feeling a little guilty for doing the opposite when she asked for the "actual truth" about old St. Nick). Liz was just sad that her teeth had gone in the garbage (according to Drew) and was relieved when I told her that they were actually in her memory box. I'm a little sad that she knows the truth now and I'm worried that we'll have to tell her the "actual truth" about Santa and the Easter bunny this year as well (I want her to stay young longer).
Liz is a great big sister to the little ones. They both copy her. In the following picture Alaina is showing me her loose teeth, "like Lizzie."A few weeks ago I let the girls decorate their own throw pillows with fabric markers. Two days ago I notice that Lizzie had written "I love (some boy from school)" on the back (I'm leaving the actual name off so she won't be teased at the family reunion next month).
Lizzie got to serve as a model for a photography workshop back in April. She was really excited about it and afterwards told me it was fun, but you wouldn't know it from the pictures. Drew was with her and he said she absolutely refused to smile, though I suppose having a dozen photographers in your face is a little intimidating.
These next shots are from a photographer that said she got her shots of Liz simply by hiding in the background and snapping some pictures in between everyone else (and probably, unbeknownst to Liz).

Laines & Gabrielle

Alaina was so excited for she and Ellie to wear these little dresses. She jabbered about how pretty hers was and how she'd put it on and marry her daddy. Her little dress was hung next to my wedding dress (which I had also recently shown the girls for the first time) so I guess that's where she got the idea. At any rate, as much as she loved the dress, it was hard for her to keep it on. She kept pulling the top down until I finally had to tie it together in back.

Stripes

I finally got a shot of Gabrielle in her Easter dress.

She wasn't super excited about it.

Our Special Harbor sprinkler park

Liz enjoyed running around with her cousins. Alaina pretty much stayed by the water-table feature. And Ellie lapped up ground water every chance she got.

Beating the Heat

Tuesday night I took the girls to a family night at the Silver Diner (too hot to eat at home). I love family night. Aside from eating a relatively cheap sit-down dinner, the girls enjoyed the services of a face painter and a balloon artist. They also got to decorate, and take home, collapsible binoculars. Alaina thought the balloon artist was absolutely hilarious.
Liz got a dragon on her face, and later, a dolphin on her arm during a lull in the line.
True to form, Laines copied her sister getting a snake on one arm and a dolphin on the other.
The girls and I went to dinner with my friend Wendi and her kids. Later that evening I took the kids to the Maney's house to sleep in their cool basement (our house was still registering in the mid-eighties). Andrew slept at home.

The next day, Wednesday afternoon, Liz had a playdate with Jordan. We lingered in the air-conditioned library for a while then headed home around 5 p.m. to wait for the repairman. It was 83 degrees when we got there and 85 when the the repairman finally showed up about 7:20 p.m. (delayed by traffic, naturally).
To beat the heat I let the girls eat icecream sandwiches outside, then made them stay in the slightly cooler basement. I had to linger upstairs (cleaning cause I couldn't sit still) because I couldn't hear doorbell in the basement.
When Drew got home he dealt with the babies and the repairman while Lizzie and I went on a mommy-daughter date to Borders. We drank hot chocolate and read our library books. I found myself frequently gazing at Liz, marveling over how bright and beautiful and delightful, and just generally wonderful she is. I'm so happy to have her.

Memorial Day Weekend

We had a pleasant holiday weekend. We got a lot done around the house on Saturday and even enjoyed a night out. On Sunday my cousin, Wendy, and her fabulous family came over for a barbecue and shortly before they had to leave my brother, Scott, and his fabulous family arrived. Andrew has really been enjoying his barbecue. The rest of the family has really been enjoying his cooking. For our holiday barbecues he made juicy lucy burgers (cheese melted inside the patty instead of on top). It was his first time making them and I think they are the only kind he'll make from now on. It was my first time having blue cheese on a hamburger (and in) and it was delicious! My girls especially loved playing with Scott & Codi's kids. We both have three girls and they seem to get along pretty well. Lainey is actually still asking, "Where Willa?"Mostly we lounged around the house while the girlies played together, but on Monday Drew went golfing and the rest of us visited a new (and FREE!) splash park. Loved it. Can't wait to take the girls back tomorrow. On Monday we also had our friends, the Pomeroys, over for a barbecue. We had eight little girls between our three families. One other thing happened on Monday. OUR AC WENT OUT! During a heatwave, with dinner guests, with out-of-town-family, on a holiday, after regular business hours, we noticed that the heat from our dinner preparations was not dissipating and then quickly discovered the actual sad situation. The indoor temp was in the eighties when we went to bed Monday night. Luckily Scott was already scheduled to go home the next day. We figured it was too hot to eat at home Tuesday morning so we treated the kids to IHOP. I spent the rest of that day and the next avoiding my hot house (mall, library, Barnes & Nobel, friends homes).

Naptime Interrupted

The other day, about an hour into what should have been a long afternoon nap, I heard Alaina running around upstairs. I went upstairs where I was not surprised to see the shut doors and pile of treasures on my bed that are both sure indicators that Lainey's been up and about. I found her in Ellie's crib. I didn't even know she could climb into the crib.Alaina had piled books and blankets in there and was showing Ellie the joys of jumping in your bed. When she saw me she smiled and said, "I wake Ellie up!" She recently learned to climb over the guard gate at the bottom of the stairs as well. It used to be that she would have to stand by the gate crying and waiting for someone to come get her. Now she has a whole new level of self-sufficiency. The first night she figured out the gate she came down to the basement about three times.A couple of those times she was in the company of her cousin, Willa. My brother's family visited last weekend and we tried to have the four oldest cousins sleep in the same room. They were giggly and excited, but Liz and Iris managed to fall asleep. They also managed to stay asleep during Willa and Lainey's loud exchanges. When my SIL, Codi, went to quiet them down the last time she found Alaina singing loudly and Willa loudly telling her to be quiet! Needless to say, Codi separated them, and after a few tears they finally fell asleep. In other news: Alaina has recently been giving me gross things. You know how your kid reaches out to give you something and you just take it without thinking? Well, lately when I thought Alaina was trying to hang me some lint or a piece of hair (because so far she hasn't been willing to just drop those to the ground herself), she was actually handing me a booger or a "boo boo" (a.k.a. picked scab). Gross. Today's exchange:

Me: Alaina, what is this? What did you give me?

Lainey: My booger.

Me: You gave me your booger?!

Lainey: Yes. I take my booger out me nose and I give it to you!
