More Christmas Activities

Yesterday after Liz finished up with school the girls and I went downtown to the the United States Botanic Garden (which I had been referring to as the "Botanical Gardens" like a dope for at least the last 10 years).
The kids loved seeing the holiday display: lots of trains, a large decorated tree, and my favorite, buildings constructed from plant material.
In the past we've encountered a lot of crowds, but this year it wasn't bad at all.  I think a weekday afternoon was the perfect time to go (on Thursdays they stay open till 8 p.m. because they offer free concerts in the atrium).  Next shot: porcupine palace.
Liz is trying to turn upside to read the upside down placard for the possum's upside down home.
Alaina was pretty excited to see the castle (neuschwanstein) that appears every year.
They had also created replicas of the presidents homes.  Below are Monticello & Mt. Vernon.
As always we had to stop by the hands-on room (my kids call it "the smelling room").  Oh, and yeah, Laines is wearing a leotard.  She slept in it the night before, last night, and wore it all day today as well.  We finally forced her to take it off tonight and bawled and bawled.
After we left the Botanic Garden we walked over to see the Capitol Christmas see, something I had yet to do in my ten years in DC.

We lingered at a reflecting pool on the way back to the van.
Liz announced, "if we were homeless this is where I would sleep."
At home, we had more mini helicopter flying.
Today we mostly hung out together.  We started our day at the 9:20 a.m. showing of Arthur Christmas (so cute).   Then after lunch, there was a disastrous attempt to make everyone nap.  Ugh.  In the evening the girls helped me make some homemade hot chocolate mix and we cut out some ornaments for our felt tree.
